Sales Conference 2000 printed on clear plinth.

Originally made for ‘Crystal Classics’ range -  a promotional business-to-business incentive aimed at jewellers and other such shops that would sell unusual but special gifts. Unfortunately, the idea didn’t grab the retailers imagination and that left Hornby with a batch of clear Lamborghini cars and a question as to what they should do with them.

At this stage, there are

1/ Lambo with lights
2/ Lambo without lights.

These are labelled as Crystal Classics on the plinth base.
I understand that there is also an amount of them without the printing on the base.

Barry Potters Auctions and a chap called Geoff Davies both happened to be approaching Hornby, quite unrelated and independently,  with a request for a special car to use at their forthcoming events. Hornby agreed to use a batch of the Lambo clear cars and sold some to the two customers. One batch had a figure/character printed on the bonnet for BPAuctions and the other batch had a letter ‘B’ printed on the bonnet for the Brooklands slot racing events. These events were held in the year 2000.

So, additionally, there are:

3/ Lambo with lights or without lights with Barry Potter Auctions insignia.
4/ Lambo with lights or without lights with a Brooklands ‘B’ printed on the bonnet.

A quantity of, it is thought, 24 were made for the annual Hornby Sales Conference 2000.
This provides a fifth variation:

5/ Lamborghini with 'Annual Sales COnference 2000' printed on a clear plinth base.

It is possible that all these cars were assigned to each project with or without lights or a mixture thereof.

At the same time, a quantity of Jaguar XJ220 were made with the Crystal Classics marketing/sales plan:
1/ XJ220 with lights
2/ XJ220 without lights.

These are labelled as Crystal Classics on the plinth base.
I understand that there is also an amount of them without the printing on the base.

During these times it was quite common for the managers to simply pop downstairs to the factory shop floor and ask the production manager to run off a ‘special run’ and the job was not officially recorded through the books. This means that many cars, these included, were not assigned ‘C’ numbers.
